French Barge Cruise Routes

Meanderer Barge Tours of France

Canal du Loing (Northern Route)

This itinerary follows the Canal du Loing from Montargis to Samois-sur-Seine, along a quiet stretch of waterways bordered by small towns, rural landscapes and the gentle rhythm of the canal.

Along the route, the journey passes through places such as Moret-sur-Loing, Nemours, Château-Landon and Grez-sur-Loing, where waterways, architecture and everyday life come together to define each town’s character.

The itinerary reveals both the calm of the countryside and traces of the region’s working river life, particularly near Saint-Mammès, where commercial barges still pass through. Time ashore may also include visits to Fontainebleau, renowned for its château and surrounding forest, and Barbizon, long associated with landscape painters and an enduring artistic tradition. Moorings are peaceful and often rural, offering easy opportunities for walking, cycling, or simply enjoying time.

Canal de Briare (Southern Route)

This southern route explores the historic Canal de Briare, travelling between Montargis and Léré, through a landscape shaped by canals, rivers, and centuries of trade and travel.

The journey unfolds through open countryside and small towns where daily life still follows the pace of the waterways. Stops along the route may include Briare, known for its remarkable pont-canal and artistic heritage; Gien, with its long-standing faïencerie tradition; and Rogny-les-Sept-Écluses, home to the striking seven-lock staircase.

Time ashore offers the chance to visit local markets, cafés, and hilltop villages such as Sancerre, surrounded by vineyards and rolling countryside. The route also allows for visits to notable châteaux in the region, including Guédelon Castle, a medieval fortress being built using traditional methods. Balanced with peaceful cruising, this itinerary offers a relaxed and richly layered experience of the region.

Each route serves as a foundation for a more detailed itinerary, including suggested visits and a day-by-day itinerary.
