The Best Sites to See During Your Barge Trip in France

The Canal Du Loing 

The Canal Du Loing, also known as the northern route, which will take you from Montargis to Samois-sur-seine. It’s one of the most popular scenic routes for numerous reasons. Montargis is a town with as much French history as any town in the country. While sailing along on the Barge Meanderer, you can plan to take advantage of seeing some of these fantastic sites when you opt to take your barge trip in France along this route:

In Samois-sur-Seine, on the left bank of the Seine, from the Pont de Valvins, extends the very old domain of the Madeleine, divided between the castle, also called “Hermitage” and the Mill, visible from the banks of the Seine. Samois-sur-Seine is also famous for having been the home of the famous jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt.
  2. Nearby is also the domain of the Château de Bellefontaine, residence in the 19th century of Prince Troubestzkoï, Ambassador of the Tsar of Russia in Paris, and his descendants the Orloff family.
  3. There are also some interesting small museums such as the Musee Girodet in Montargis which contains many beautiful art and paintings by some of the most famous French artists such as Henri de Triqueti, a famous romanticism sculptor. The museum itself is beloved by many of the locals who live there. Montargis is also famous for the Church Saint Madeleine with its soaring stained glass windows that will take your breath away.  In Moret-Sur-Loing, you will find a remarkable example of renaissance stone-masonry, and a. building in which Napoleon once stayed for a night. The Musée du Sucre d’orge is the most famous museum in Moret-Sur-Loing, and is an ode to the “barley sugar” candy called ‘sucre d’orge’ which happens to be the sweetest, most delicious piece of candy in France. First made by Benedictine nuns in the 17C, the original recipe is a closely guarded secret and has been handed down through the generations.

The Canal de Briare 

Canal De Briare, also known as the southern route, happens to be one of the oldest French canals. It takes you through Montbouy, which is known for its ancient history and romantic renaissance views. Along your French barge cruise, you can take the time to see:

5. In Montcresson, you will see huge monuments such as the Chateau de la Foret which is an abandoned castle that has beautiful vintage wallpaper and statues that were made to replicate some of France’s most famous faces of history.
